Since its origin in 1918, the former Lewistown Chamber of Commerce, today’s Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, has served a vast region in Central Pennsylvania. History tells us the story of the
era when Lewistown was the hub of commerce throughout the region.
Today we serve both Mifflin and Juniata Counties, a population of approximately 75,000 people. We are headquartered in the Historic Courthouse on the town square in downtown Lewistown where we occupy five offices and strive to improve business, economic development, tourism and quality of life.
Over the decades one constant has been the importance and anticipation of the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. Early on it was a full blown gala, with formal attire a must, an orchestra for dancing, fine dining, speeches galore, award presentations and introduction of new officers and board members.
Many changes have taken place bringing us to today’s annual membership breakfast at the Lewistown Country Club every April. This much prioritized event serves as an educational, informational and entertaining climax to each year’s programs and activities.
The highlight of the meeting is the presentation of awards in seven different categories. They are Community Service, Ambassador, Emerging Business, Spirit of the Juniata River Valley, Volunteer, Pride and Service Above Self.
The chamber seeks out guest speakers who bring their business related stories to the membership, often announcing exciting projects or changes in their industry. Election of officers and new board members follow the nominating committee report, the President reviews the year’s activities and shines a spotlight on future endeavors.
